A car lot makes its money one unit at a time
Every car on the lot is its own small business. It cost what you paid at the auction, plus the transport, plus every dollar of reconditioning that went into it before it hit the front line. If those recon dollars land in a general expense bucket instead of on the unit, then the gross profit you think you made on that car is fiction, and the lot can feel profitable while the aging units quietly eat what the fresh ones earn.
If you floor plan your inventory, the bank balance lies a second way. Interest accrues on every floored unit every day it sits, and when a floored car sells, a piece of the money in your account already belongs to the lender. Miss a payoff window and you have a problem no dealer wants; the lender’s audits assume your books can show, unit by unit, what sold and what got paid off. When the books are behind, that becomes a scramble instead of a printout.
Then there is the money that was never yours: the sales tax collected on the deal and the title and tag dollars held for the state, sitting in the same account as everything else. Cash deals bring federal reporting obligations of their own. And behind it all, the ordinary drag: payroll with commissions squeezed in around Saturday sales, a fall tax surprise, and a personal tax return that inherits whatever fog the lot’s books were in.
The dealers who come to us are not looking for anything fancy. They want to know what each unit actually made, what the lender is owed, and what is truly theirs, from a firm that also files the tax return.
Our approach
The same firm keeps the lot’s books and signs its tax return
At Voss, a dealership starts with the books, not the tax return. Accounts are reconciled every month, with every vehicle carried at its real cost, purchase, transport, and reconditioning attached to the unit, so gross profit per car is a fact instead of a feeling, and the units aging past their welcome are visible before they get expensive. The floor plan is reconciled alongside the bank, so what belongs to you and what belongs to the lender is never a guess, and a lender audit is a report, not a fire drill.
The pass-through money stays straight: sales tax tracked and filed on schedule, title and tag dollars accounted for separately, and federal cash reporting (IRS Form 8300, the form required when a customer pays more than $10,000 in cash) handled correctly, which protects you. From there, payroll runs on the firm’s calendar, salespeople with commissions, detail and service staff, year-end W-2s and 1099s included. Then the planning: a fall projection so you see the tax bill with months to act, with inventory levels and year-end purchases modeled before the year closes rather than explained after. And because the same firm also prepares the owner’s personal tax return, the lot’s profit and your 1040 never surprise each other.
Reconciled every month, unit by unit, with the floor plan tied out, so you always know what the lot actually made and what it merely holds.
Payroll, sales tax filings, and year-end forms run on our calendar, not on whatever is left after Saturday.

The Clean Books Standard
Most firms go silent May through January, then scramble February through April. We run the opposite way — a clean file isn’t an accident, it’s a standard we hold every month.
We move your file and clean it up.
Sign one authorization and we pull your prior returns, schedules, and books from your old firm. The switch happens in the background.
- Prior-year return reviewed for missed deductions
- Every account reconciled, books brought current
- Live within 30–60 days of signing
We project your tax bill before April.
When your year calls for it, we run a full projection before year-end, so you know what you’ll owe with months to plan, not days, and weigh the tax impact of big decisions first.
- Available for Projection Meetings
- Quarterly federal & Mississippi estimates
- No scrambling for cash nobody warned you about
One firm, every filing, year-round.
Business return, personal return, payroll, sales tax, the Mississippi Department of Revenue (MS DOR), the IRS — all under one roof, all signed by a credentialed CPA. A letter shows up, we handle it.
- A credentialed CPA on the line, not a call center
- Monthly financials hit your inbox
- IRS & MS DOR letters handled by the firm
What a dealership gets from one firm
Financial statements that show what the lot earned, what the lender is owed, and what is actually yours.
Every car carried at its real cost, so the number you made on it is the number you made on it.
Payoffs tracked unit by unit, tied to the bank, so a lender audit is a printout instead of a weekend.
Salespeople, detail, and service staff paid on our calendar, with year-end W-2s and 1099s done.
A projection while there is still time to act, with inventory and year-end buying modeled instead of guessed.
The same firm prepares the owner’s personal tax return, so the dealership’s profit and your 1040 are planned as one picture.
